canada's only webcast #4: losing it at the movies

polleen cale

The Adventures of DJ Shoe on the Reels of Steel

DJ Shoe pops in to mash up commentary from a certain well known movie critic (who for reasons of copyright infringement he'd prefer to not advertise by name) with some of his favourite movie-themed (mostly new wave) pop songs. Sort of a remix, sort of a documentary, sort of a way-too-long radio spot, basically a failed experiment...and 100% illegal. Available only for a limited time.

Track excerpts include:
"Be My Baby," Ronettes
"(I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea," Elvis Costello
"Boredom," Buzzcocks
"French Film Blurred," Wire
"Is There Life on Mars," David Bowie
"He Took Her to a Movie," Ladytron
"A Man Needs a Maid," Neil Young
"I'm in Love With a German Film Star," the Passions
"Ce Matin La," Air
"Deeper Into Movies," Yo La Tengo

Featuring cameos by Laura Dern, Harvey Keitel, John Cazale, and others.

canada's only webcast #3: CHRIS BUCK

dick & buck

The Strange Allure of Richard Nixon

For the third in my series of webcasts, I tap the phone of my friend Chris Buck to discuss the 37th President of the United States, Richard Nixon. Chris, a transplanted Torontonian who has been living and doing celebrity photography in New York for over 15 years, has long been obsessed with Nixon, though his interest in RMN is less political than personal: it's the man himself who fascinates him. He admits in this interview that Nixon, "quite possibly the worst President ever" is also "the most interesting President ever." That's not necessarily a contradiction, and hopefully this interview sheds a little light on why.

Playlist
1. "The Love of Richard Nixon," Manic St. Preachers
2. "Save the Watergate 500," Melvin Van Peebles
3. "Mexico," Jefferson Airplane
4. "The State of Richard Nixon," Phil Ochs

canada's only webcast #2: PHIL DELLIO

    Talkin' Record Collector Blues

My second webcast is an interview I did with my friend Phil Dellio about the excellent "Records" feature on his homepage, wherein he catalogued his entire album collection, and wrote about the records and artists that still matter to him (and some who don't--and some who never did). In this conversation, Phil talks about outgrowing Joy Division, the secret meaning of "Dancing With Myself," and why he ultimately prefers Hüsker Dü to Cameo (and Bay City Rollers to Count Basie).

    Playlist
    1. "Disorder," Joy Division
    2. "It's No Secret" (live), Jefferson Airplane
    3. "Stolen Moments," Oliver Nelson
    4. "Ocean Girl," Neil Young

A Life Worth Living is a Life Worth Blogging

This is my first webcast--a phone interview with Steven Rubio, whose self-titled blog has long been a favourite of mine (for reasons I share in the interview). The bulk of this conversation is about writing and about blogging, and along the way Steven also has some interesting things to say about Greil Marcus, Pauline Kael, Milton Berle, and George W. Bush.

    Playlist
